What happened to the mom-rock from the Ben Folds camp? When did his descent into indie weirdness happen? Probably sometime between covering Snoop Dogg’s “Bitches Ain’t Shit” and releasing this newest album, Stems and Seeds, Ben Folds went from minivan music to this decade’s Atom and His Package.

Now, I won’t spend too much time on this album since it technically isn’t a “new” album, but the concept of open music does bear a voice. This album is a double disc set where the first album is practically a playable data album where you can upload the album into your GarageBand/Logic Pro/Pro Tools rig and remix this album without having to slice and dice up the frequencies just to get an instrumental or vocal isolation. A few other artists have put out “raw track” or “seed track” versions of their albums or songs (e.g. Jay-Z) but not many see the underlying education this unveils to us amateur producers. Being able to manipulate some nicely recorded things and have something to compare it to (this Ben Folds’ album is a remastering of his last release Way to Normal). Albums like this are like report cards for people like me since I can now take this album and fiddle with it and compare it to what was the final product.
Other than that, this album was just a further descent into weird indie comedy. It’s that weird descent every popular artist steps up into at one point, usually in form of a cover song, but never take to “full weirdness”. Ben Folds has set a new bar for such an achievement.
